Site Clearing, Slab and Pool Removal in Mackay

A cleared, level block is the end goal of most Mackay demolition jobs, and sometimes the whole job. Site clearing covers removing slabs and stumps, breaking out driveways and paths, removing pools, clearing overgrown vegetation and dumped rubbish, and preparing the ground for a builder or a sale. In Mackay, heavy wet-season rain, stormwater, termites and cyclone debris all affect how and when that work is done.

Mackay Demolition Service is a referral service. With your consent, we connect owners with independent licensed demolition and earthmoving contractors. We do not carry out the work.

What site clearing can include

  • Stump and footing removal: timber, steel or concrete stumps from high-set houses, plus slabs and strip footings.
  • Concrete and paving: driveways, paths, patios and hardstands.
  • Pool removal: in-ground concrete or fibreglass pools, partially removed and filled, or fully removed.
  • Vegetation and rubbish: overgrown yards, storm debris and old fencing.
  • Tree and stump grinding, subject to council vegetation controls.
  • Levelling and grading for a builder-ready pad, or a tidy block for sale.

Stumps from high-set houses

When a high-set Queenslander is demolished, it can leave dozens of timber or concrete stumps behind, along with old footings and termite-damaged timber. All of these should be removed before a new slab is poured, so the builder starts on clean, compactable ground. Confirm in the quote that every stump and footing is coming out, and that holes will be backfilled and compacted.

Pool removal options

Australian 2026 guides describe two main methods:

  1. Partial removal and backfill: the top of the shell is broken down, the floor is punctured for drainage, and the hole is backfilled and compacted. This costs less but can limit later building.
  2. Full removal: the entire shell is removed and replaced with engineered, compacted fill. This costs more but leaves the land unrestricted.

Guides suggest about $8,000 to $15,000 for partial removal and $25,000 to $40,000 or more for full removal. Mackay's high water tables in some low-lying areas, and wet-season groundwater, can affect pool removal and dewatering. Ask your certifier or engineer about fill and compaction requirements, and check with council about pool safety and registration once the pool is removed.

Vegetation and trees

Mackay Regional Council's planning scheme includes vegetation controls in some areas, and larger rural blocks may involve state vegetation rules. Check before removing significant trees. Mangrove and waterway buffers near the coast and creeks are particularly sensitive.

Stormwater and erosion

Bare ground in Mackay can wash away fast in tropical downpours. Erosion and sediment controls, such as silt fences, stabilised entries and keeping sediment out of drains, protect neighbours and waterways, and council may require them. Plan where water will flow while the site is cleared, and finish grading so water drains away from neighbours and future buildings.

Before machines arrive

  • Dial Before You Dig to locate underground services.
  • Boundaries and survey pegs, especially where fences come out.
  • Neighbour fences and trees, agreed in advance.
  • Footpaths and kerbs, photographed before trucks arrive.

Asbestos and contaminated ground

Older Mackay blocks may contain buried fibro, storm debris or demolition waste from earlier work. Fragments need assessment and licensed removal where required. Former workshops or fuel storage may mean soil testing.

Timing with the wet season

Most site clearing is easier from about April to November. Wet-season rain can soften ground, cause erosion and delay trucks. If you must clear in the wet, budget for sediment controls and possible delays.

Pricing factors

Price depends on volume and type of materials, number of stumps, access, machine time, disposal and fill. Clean concrete is usually recycled, which costs less than mixed waste.

Clearing for sale or subdivision

Owners preparing a block for sale often want a clean, level, mowed lot without old concrete, rubbish or dead trees. It looks better in listing photos and lets buyers picture a new home. For subdivision, the surveyor's and civil engineer's plans determine what must come out, where new services will run, and what levels are needed. Follow those drawings rather than clearing ahead of them, and leave survey marks and any existing access until the new design is settled.

An itemised quote that separates stumps, concrete, pool, vegetation and grading lets you choose what to include, and leave out anything a buyer or builder would rather handle.

Waste and recycling

Clean concrete, brick and soil can usually be recycled or reused, while mixed waste costs more to dispose of. Ask the contractor where each material is going, and keep dockets, particularly for anything treated as contaminated.

Frequently asked questions

How much does pool removal cost in Mackay?

Published 2026 guides suggest about $8,000 to $15,000 for partial removal and $25,000 to $40,000 or more for full removal. These figures are a budgeting guide, not a quote.

Do all the old house stumps need to come out?

For a new build, generally yes. Leftover stumps can rot, attract termites and interfere with new footings.

Can I clear trees on my block?

Check council vegetation controls first, especially near waterways and on larger lots.

Is wet-season site clearing a problem?

It can be. Rain can soften ground and cause erosion, so plan sediment controls and allow for delays.

What happens to the concrete?

It is usually taken to a recycler and crushed for reuse.

Will clearing include levelling?

Only if it is in the scope. Ask for the final ground condition to be stated in the quote.

Next step

Tell us what needs clearing, the block size, access and your plans. With your consent, we will pass your enquiry to a licensed contractor in the Mackay region.

Photos of the block, the access path, any slab or pool, and the trees involved help contractors price more accurately, and often save a site visit before an initial estimate.

Mention whether the block is low-lying, near a creek or prone to ponding after rain. It affects the timing, sediment controls and fill the contractor will recommend.
